What is a Fungal Nail Infection?
A fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis, occurs when a fungus infects the nail plate or the skin underneath the nail. It most commonly affects the toenails and is a frequent cause of thickened or discoloured nails.
Fungal nail infections are more common in adults and become increasingly common with age. They may affect one nail or several nails.
The infection can cause noticeable changes to the appearance of the nail, including:
- White, yellow, brown or darker discolouration.
- Thickening of the nail.
- Brittle, crumbly or splitting nails.
- Distortion or lifting of the nail from the nail bed.
- A build-up of debris underneath the nail.
- An unpleasant smell in some cases.
The infection usually develops gradually and may worsen over time if it is not treated.
What Happens if Fungal Nails are Left Untreated?
Fungal nail infections do not usually clear without treatment and may gradually become more established.
If left untreated, the nail may:
- Become increasingly thickened and discoloured.
- Turn white, yellow, brown, green or black.
- Become brittle, crumbly or distorted.
- Lift away from the nail bed.
- Become difficult to cut or manage.
- Cause pressure, discomfort or pain when wearing footwear.
- Affect surrounding nails or skin.
Thickened nails may place additional pressure on the toe, particularly inside close-fitting footwear. This may be more problematic for people with diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation in their feet.

Knowledgeable and very friendly! I recently came due to an infected toenail that was red and swollen. My appointment was with Jamil, who was incredibly helpful and kind. He sanded down my toenail down as it was thick, and drilled a hole into my toenail to release the pressure from the infection which immediately feel better. I will be following up soon for another appointment to make sure it’s healing properly. NikiPosted on Google![]()

What Causes Fungal Nail Infections?
Most fungal nail infections are caused by fungi known as dermatophytes. These fungi can also cause fungal skin infections such as athlete’s foot.
Fungi thrive in warm, dark and moist environments. Feet are particularly vulnerable because they may remain enclosed in socks and footwear for prolonged periods.
Fungal infections can spread through direct contact or from contaminated surfaces, footwear, towels and foot-care equipment.
You may be at greater risk of developing a fungal nail infection if you:
- Have Athlete’s Foot.
- Frequently wear tight or non-breathable footwear.
- Have feet that become hot and sweaty.
- Walk barefoot in communal showers, changing rooms, gyms or swimming pools.
- Have damaged the nail or surrounding skin.
- Share towels, socks, shoes or nail-care equipment.
- Have diabetes, psoriasis or poor circulation.
- Have a weakened immune system.
- Are older or have difficulty caring for your feet and nails.
A fungal skin infection can also spread from the surrounding skin into the nail. Similarly, an infected nail may contribute to repeated fungal skin infections.
What Self-Care Can Help Fungal Nail Infections?
Good foot hygiene can help reduce the risk of fungal infection spreading or returning.
You should:
- Wash your feet regularly and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.
- Change your socks every day.
- Wear clean, breathable socks.
- Choose correctly fitting footwear made from breathable materials.
- Allow shoes to dry fully between uses.
- Rotate footwear rather than wearing the same pair every day.
- Keep the nails short and cut them straight across.
- Avoid picking at or tearing damaged nails.
- Do not share towels, socks, footwear, nail clippers or nail files.
- Wash towels and socks regularly at the highest temperature permitted by the fabric-care instructions.
- Use an antifungal footwear spray or powder where recommended.
- Wear suitable footwear in communal showers, swimming pools and changing areas.
- Treat athlete’s foot promptly to prevent it spreading to the nails.
- Clean and disinfect nail-care equipment after use.
Self-care can help control the condition, but established fungal nail infections often require antifungal lacquer, oral medication or professional nail treatment.
A podiatrist can assess the nail, confirm whether a fungal infection is present and discuss the most appropriate treatment options.
How We Treat Fungal Nail Infections: Topical or Oral Treatments
There is a choice of either oral or topical anti-fungal treatments, for best results consult a doctor or podiatrist to confirm your diagnoses and assess your needs.
Topical treatments are available over the counter or from your podiatrist. Fungal nail infections can take a long time to resolve (12 months +), but the proper preparation of the nail surface by a podiatrist prior to applying the topical agent can increase the success.
Alternatively, oral anti-fungal treatments can be prescribed by your GP if you are suitable – which can take around 12 weeks for the medication to kill the infection. However, full recovery will take 6 to 18 months as the nail will need to fully grow out.

Fungal Nail Infection FAQs
How can I tell if my nail has a fungal infection?
Infected nails usually turn yellow, brown, or white. They may become thick, brittle, crumbly, or lifted away from the nail bed.
Why are fungal nail infections so hard to treat?
The fungus lives deep within the nail bed underneath the hard nail plate, making it difficult for standard topical paints to penetrate effectively. You can spend lots of money buying over-the-counter remedies that just won’t do the job.
What are the best professional treatments available?
A podiatrist can provide specialised treatments such as the PreventID® Dermatophyte nail test, professional mechanical debridement (filing down the nail), prescription-strength lacquers, or advanced options like K-Laser therapy and nail surgery.
