1. The Problem
When Nicola first came into our clinic, her toenail was red, swollen and very painful. She had already been to her GP and started a course of antibiotics, but the pressure and discomfort hadn’t eased.
During our initial assessment, our podiatrist Jamil looked closely at the affected nail and Nicola’s history with it. Our experts found that:
- An old injury had left the nail weak and damaged. The nail had fallen off completely in the past because of trauma, and Nicola had had ongoing problems with it since. A damaged nail like this is more open to infection.
- Infection had built up underneath the nail. The nail had grown back thick, and the back of it was full of pus. With nowhere for the infection to drain, pressure was building and causing the pain and swelling. Left untreated, it would have kept getting worse.
2. Our Treatment
We didn’t just want to ease the pain for now. We wanted the nail to heal properly. Nicola’s personalised care plan included:
- Nail reduction: We carefully sanded down the thickened nail so we could get to the problem area and take pressure off the toe.
- Releasing the infection: Jamil drilled a small hole into the nail, which let the trapped pus drain fully. This took the pressure off straight away.
- Medication support: Nicola was already taking antibiotics from her GP. Our podiatrists can also supply certain prescription-only medicines where needed, so patients can get the right treatment in one place.
- Follow-up care: We booked a review appointment to check the nail is healing properly and to keep an eye on the damaged nail.
