Case Study: Bradley’s Recurring Ingrown Toenails & Nail Surgery

Clinic Location: Sheffield & Wakefield

Service Provided: Ingrown Toenail Treatment & Nail Surgery

1. The Problem

The patient came to our clinic in Sheffield for ingrown toenail treatment. They had recurring ingrown toenails on both big toes, causing ongoing pain with redness and a mild infection. Previous nail cutting only provided temporary relief.

This was likely caused by ill-fitting footwear, which resulted in trauma and bruising beneath both big toes (a subungual haematoma), leading to pain and swelling.

As the undamaged nail started to grow out, the patient trimmed the nail too deeply at the sides, which may have contributed to the nail growing into the surrounding skin and developing ingrown toenails.

2. Our Treatment

At the initial consultation, we trimmed back the affected part of the nail in an attempt to help it grow back normally.

When the issue persisted over the following months, we recommended partial nail surgery to permanently remove the offending section of the nail and prevent recurrence.

If you’d like to find out more about why your ingrown toenail keeps coming back and what you can do to stop it, make sure to read our blog post.

3. The Outcome

The procedure was successful, with no recurrence of ingrown toenail. Following a short recovery period after the surgery, the patient returned to normal activities pain-free.

Recurrent ingrown toenails often require a permanent solution, with nail surgery being a safe and effective long-term solution.
